The Bursledon Gig is a 15 foot rowing boat that has been adopted by local clubs, Sea Scouts, companies and families for recreational and competitive rowing on the River. There are now more than 20 Gigs on the River. For racing they are normally rowed with a crew of 4 and a cox.
The Boatyard Sheave race (first event on Saturday afternoon), is the last race in a series that runs through the Summer. It is now raced as a timed event with boats starting in pairs, at 30 second intervals, from the Jolly Sailor start line, rowing to a buoy in the reach south of Bursledon Spit and back. The Race takes about 15 minutes and to take part, crews must complete an entry form and attend a safety briefing at 13:00 approx. in the marquee in the Elephant Boatyard.
Hamble River Rowing Club keeps a small fleet of Bursledon Gigs at the Jolly Sailor and welcomes new members, novice or experienced to try rowing at its Tuesday evening sessions. see the rowing diary on www.hambleriverrowing.co.uk to check that there is sufficient water for rowing.
